STATE OF THE SCIENCE

ANNUAL MEETING

The Gulf Coast and Caribbean State of the Science Annual Meeting Series convened the 2026 State of the Science Meeting in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Southeastern Coastal Center for Agricultural Health and Safety and our new collaboration with the Southeast & Caribbean Disaster Resilience Partnership (SCDRP).

The 2026 State of the Science Meeting took place on March 2-3, 2026 at the College of Charleston, directly preceding the SCDRP 2026 10th Anniversary Annual Meeting on March 4-5, 2026.

The theme of the 2026 State of the Science Meeting was Change Among Our Working Waterfronts. Attendees explored the evolving challenges facing coastal communities and fishery workers, with a deeper focus on the health and safety impacts of natural disasters. The meeting also highlighted forward-looking solutions and opportunities to strengthen resilience and support sustainable waterfront communities.

The meeting featured four engaging sessions, including Community Voices, Research, Extension/Education and Opportunities/Solutions, as well as a dynamic poster session. Attendees heard directly from those most affected, ensuring that the lived experiences of fishery workers and coastal residents remained at the heart of the conversation.
